In Defence of Ramayana VFX Ranbir Kapoor Weighs in on CG Critics

Actor Ranbir Kapoor feels that many online users have criticized the VFX in the trailer of Ramayana without keeping themselves aware and informed. The film’s visual effects, as per the Bollywood actor, was designed meticulously. In recent years, digital audiences have become increasingly critical of computer-generated imagery (CGI) based solely on preliminary promotional footage, he implied.

The Animal actor pointed out that online audiences have adopted a harsher analytical lens. “There is also a new phenomenon right now that in the last few years, there has been such a large number of people online who have become CG critics,” he remarked, further noting that viewers frequently dismiss early trailers.

‘It’s quite funny…’

According to Ranbir, this trend stems from a heightened public interest in digital rendering, driven also by the rise of AI. “People are getting more interested in how good the CG is, how good the CG will finally look once the film releases. And I think that is quite funny sometimes,” he shared, noting that critics often underestimate the technical labour involved. “Because people who don’t know how CG is done, people think like someone’s just used some AI and released something.”

What What he said next underlined his faith in the project and its high-calibre visual effects. “There’s countless hours of work where artists are working for years,” he explained, citing the tireless dedication of the creative team. “I have seen Nitesh sir (director), Namit (producer) sitting on VFX calls ever since this project started, trying to get even the colour of the sky right,” Ranbir added.

Ranbir Kapoor acknowledged the challenge filmmakers face in meeting modern expectations. “It is tricky right now, to really impress the audience with authentic CG,” he shared.

Ramayana, co-starring Sai Pallavi, Yash and Sunny Deol, will be released on November 8 at the Indian box-office.
