Vijay’s much-awaited swansong Jana Nayagan has already begun reshaping the Tamil film release calendar. Just hours after KVN Productions confirmed that H Vinoth’s directorial will hit theatres on July 23, a string of films scheduled around the same period have either postponed their release or are expected to follow suit, clearing the way for one of the year’s biggest Tamil releases.
The first to announce a change was GV Prakash Kumar’s fantasy thriller Immortal. The film, which was originally slated to arrive on July 23, will now release on September 4. Sharing the updated release date, GV Prakash acknowledged the reason behind the shift with a light-hearted caption that read, “Thalapathy vandha thalli poyi dhaaney aaganum adhuvum one Last time …. Best of luck team JN …”
Directed by Mariyappan Chinna of Jackpot fame, Immortal is billed as a fantasy thriller featuring GV Prakash alongside Kayadu Lohar. While the makers have kept the story under wraps, the recently released teaser hints at a supernatural narrative centred on a young man haunted by a monstrous presence while trying to get closer to his neighbour. The film also features TM Karthik, Kumar Natarajan, Lollu Sabha Maaran, Aaditya Kathir, Arshu Maharjan, Pema Tsamchoe and Sunita Shrestha.
Jana Nayagan reshapes the release calendar
Jana Nayagan has been one of Tamil cinema’s most anticipated releases ever since it was announced as Vijay’s final film before his full-time political career. The film was initially expected to arrive on January 9 but was delayed after running into certification hurdles. It also suffered a major setback when footage from the film surfaced online through piracy. With those issues now behind it, the makers officially locked July 23 as the new release date on Wednesday.
Given the scale of the project and Vijay’s box office pull, exhibitors and producers appear reluctant to pit other releases against it. Besides Immortal, Keerthy Suresh’s Sathyavan Savithiri, which had been scheduled for July 24, is also widely expected to announce a revised release plan.

DC also moves, reveals CBFC certification
On Thursday, the makers of DC confirmed that the action thriller has been pushed from July 31 to August 7. Along with the revised release plan, the team also revealed that the film has received an ‘A’ certificate from the CBFC.
Headlined by Lokesh Kanagaraj and Wamiqa Gabbi, DC also stars Sanjana Krishnamoorthy and Avinash Raghudevan. The film marks Arun Matheswaran’s fourth directorial venture after Rocky, Saani Kaayidham and Captain Miller. Backed by Kalanithi Maran under the Sun Pictures banner, the film has music by Anirudh Ravichander, cinematography by Mukesh G, editing by GK Prasanna and action choreography by PC Stunts.
Meanwhile, Lokesh Kanagaraj, who was last seen leading Rajinikanth’s Coolie, is set to direct Allu Arjun in the tentatively titled AA23. Wamiqa Gabbi, on the other hand, has a busy slate with projects including Tiki Taka and Kuki Ki Kundli.
Helmed by H Vinoth, Jana Nayagan also features Mamitha Baiju, Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Priyamani, Gautham Vasudev Menon and several others in pivotal roles. With the film now firmly back on track, its arrival is already having a significant impact on the release strategies of several Tamil films, underlining the kind of box office influence Vijay continues to command ahead of what is being billed as his farewell to cinema.
