Joju Georgeâs Varavu Release Pushed To June

The makers of Varavu, starring Joju George and directed by Shaji Kailas, have confirmed a new theatrical release date. The film is now set to hit screens on June 12, after its earlier planned release on May 1 was postponed. At the time of the delay, the team had not announced a revised date, leaving audiences waiting for clarity on its arrival.

With the new date in place, Varavu positions itself as one of the upcoming Malayalam releases aiming to tap into the commercial action space. The collaboration between Shaji Kailas and writer A K Sajan is notable, given their past work together in films such as Chinthamani Kolacase, Red Chillies, and Dhrona 2010. Sajan has also previously written Pulimada, which featured Joju George in a central role.

This reunion signals a return to a style of storytelling that leans on strong character arcs, conflict-driven narratives, and a rooted sense of place. For Shaji Kailas, whose filmography includes several action-oriented dramas, Varavu continues a familiar trajectory while placing a contemporary actor like Joju at its centre.

A High-Range Drama With An Ensemble Backing

Set against the backdrop of Kerala’s high ranges, Varavu revolves around Polachan, also known as Poly, played by Joju George. A wealthy planter, the character returns to his native land with the intent of addressing unresolved tensions and long-standing rivalries. The premise suggests a narrative built around personal stakes, power dynamics, and the emotional weight of returning to a place shaped by history.

The film brings together a wide-ranging ensemble cast that includes Vani Viswanath, Murali Gopy, Arjun Ashokan, Saniya Iyappan, Sukanya, Baburaj and Vincy Aloshious. The presence of both seasoned performers and younger actors points to a narrative that could balance generational perspectives within its central conflict.

On the technical front, the film features cinematography by S Saravanan, whose work is expected to capture the visual texture of the high-range setting, a key element in films rooted in Kerala’s plantation landscapes. Editing is handled by Shameer Muhammed, while the music is composed by Sam CS, whose recent work across industries has leaned towards atmospheric scoring.

Varavu is produced by Naisy Reji under the banner of Olga Productions, with Jomy Joseph attached as co-producer. The project adds to the slate of Malayalam films that continue to explore action-driven narratives while grounding them in local contexts and character-driven storytelling.

With its revised release date now confirmed, the film’s reception will likely depend on how it balances its genre elements with the emotional core of its central character, a space where Joju George has consistently found resonance in recent years.
