Tamil actor Manoj Bharathiraja, the son of veteran filmmaker Bharathiraja, has passed away. He reportedly breathed his last in Chennai on Tuesday evening. He was 48 years old. The actor underwent bypass surgery and was recovering at home in Chetpet, Chennai, when he suffered a heart attack. His loss has left his loved ones and the film industry shocked.

As per reports on a leading news portal, Manoj’s manager confirmed the tragic news. His manager shared that Manoj was at home recovering from a recent bypass surgery. He succumbed to a heart attack. His father Bharathiraja rushed to his residence from Neelankarai. So far, the details about his funeral and other processions haven’t been disclosed.
Manoj Bharathiraja’s filmography
Manoj made his debut in his father Bharathiraja’s film Taj Mahal, which was released in 1999. The film also featured Riya Sen, Revathi, Manivannan and more. Later, he went on to star in films like Allu Arjuna, Samidhiram and Varshmellam Vasantham. Mahjong also assisted on films including director Shankar’s Enthiran. He played supporting roles in Eeswaran, Champion, Maanaadu and Viruman.
Manoj Bharathiraja is survived by his wife, Ashwathi and two daughters, Arshitha and Amthivathani. His final project was the Tamil-language web series, Snakes and Ladders. The show released on OTT back in 2024.
Moving tributes have been pouring in for the actor. Kamal Haasan shared, “I was deeply shocked and saddened to hear the news of the passing of Manoj Bharathiraja, the son of actor and my soulmate director Bharathiraja.” He added, “I express my deepest condolences to Bharathiraja, his family, and friends, who are grieving the loss of their beloved son.”
Director Venkat Prabhu shared, “Really shocking to hear the news.. can’t believe u r no more my brother #manoj gone toooo soon… deepest condolences to @offBharathiraja uncle family and friends… may ur soul RIP.”
