Superstar Mohanlal and Prithviraj Sukumaran’s film L2: Empuraan is in the midst of controversy. The film’s alleged depiction of the 2002 Gujarat riots did not sit well with certain section of the society. BJP-RSS leaders have objected to it and RSS mouthpiece Organiser published an article claiming that the film is trying to vilify the Hindu community. Amid this, Mohanlal has issued an apology.
He took to Facebook to pen a note in Malayalam and said that none of his films promote hatred. Roughly translated to English, his post reads, “I have learned that some of the political-social themes that have emerged in L2: Empuraan have caused a lot of depression for many of my lovers. As an artist, it is my duty to ensure that none of my movies harbours hatred towards any political movement, idea or religion. Therefore, myself and the Empuraan team sincerely regret the mental pain caused to my loved ones, and with the realization that the responsibility lies with all of us who worked behind the film.”

His statement continued, “We have decided together to compulsorily remove such topics from the cinema.” Meanwhile, the Central Board of Film Certification has suggested 17 changes in the film which is already running in the theatres.
Filmfare’s Review of L2: Empuraan
Filmfare rated the film 3/5 and said in its review, “L2: Empuraan is more of a cautionary tale against the saffronisation of our secular society than an action film. While the action scenes are imaginatively framed, the 180-minute length needed to be curtailed. There’s too much gap between these high-octane moments, especially in the first half, leaving the film to coast on Mohanlal’s swag. Director Prithviraj Sukumaran has sacrificed storytelling on the altar of his political beliefs. It takes heart to make such a film, which preaches communal harmony and unity, in today’s environment, and we hope that viewers take home the lesson it contains.”
