Noelia Castillo Ramos, a 25-year-old Spanish woman from Barcelona became the subject of a landmark legal and ethical debate after successfully fighting for her right to die through voluntary euthanasia. She passed away on March 26, 2026, at a long-term care facility in Sant Pere de Ribes. Noeila’s request for euthanasia was based on a prolonged period of suffering from physical and mental issues, stemming from a tragic incident. As the case gains worldwide attention, here’s what we know about her family so far and their reaction to her big decision.
Did Noelia Castillo Ramos’ parents and sister support her decision to undergo euthanasia?
No parents want to see their kids die, and the same was the case for Noelia Castillo Ramos’ parents. They were absolutely against her undergoing euthanasia and voluntarily ending her life. Noeila’s father, Geronimo Castillo was the primary legal opponent to her request for euthanasia. He led a 601-day legal campaign against his daughter’s euthanasia plea, supported by the conservative group Abogados Cristianos (Christian Lawyers). Geronimo argued that Noeila lacked the mental capacity to make such a big decision due to her diagnosed personality disorder. Regarding her father, Noeila told the Spanish program, Y Ahora Sonsoles:
“I don’t feel sorry for him [Geronimo] anymore. He hasn’t respected my decision and he never will…I understand. He’s a father and he doesn’t want to lose a daughter, but he doesn’t listen to me. He never calls me, he never writes to me. The only thing he does is bring me food. Why does he want me alive? To keep me in a hospital?”
