After completing its theatrical run earlier this year, Tovino Thomas’ period action drama Pallichattambi is gearing up for its digital premiere. Sony LIV announced on Wednesday that the film will soon be available to stream on the platform, giving audiences another opportunity to experience the historical action drama from the comfort of their homes.
Directed by Dijo Jose Antony and written by S Suresh Babu, Pallichattambi hit theatres on April 15 and received mixed reviews upon release. While opinions remained divided on the film’s narrative, it earned praise for its ambitious scale, production design and Tovino Thomas’ committed performance in the lead role. The film now begins its OTT journey on July 24, a route that has helped several Malayalam films find a wider audience beyond their theatrical run.
A tale of faith, power and political conflict
Set in Kerala in 1958, Pallichattambi follows the journey of Krishna Pillai, a carefree rowdy who gradually transforms into the feared Pallichattambi, a powerful church strongman. Against the backdrop of the hill village of Kaaniyar, the story unfolds amid growing ideological tensions, where politics, religion and authority become deeply intertwined. As the conflict intensifies, the protagonist is forced to make choices that could shape the future of an entire community.
Drawing from one of Kerala’s most politically charged periods, the film blends action with drama while exploring questions of leadership, loyalty and justice. The historical setting serves as more than just a backdrop, adding weight to the personal and political conflicts that drive the narrative.
Speaking about the film’s digital premiere, Tovino said, “Pallichattambi is a story of transformation, courage, and standing up for what is right, set against one of the most fascinating chapters of Kerala’s history. Portraying Pothan Christopher was an incredibly fulfilling experience, and I’m delighted that the film will now reach an even wider audience through Sony LIV. Over the years, several of my films have found immense love on the platform, and it’s heartening to see the strong connection Sony LIV has built with Malayalam cinema lovers across the world. I hope audiences enjoy every moment of this action-packed, emotional, and deeply engaging journey.”
Ensemble cast backs the historical drama
Alongside Tovino Thomas, the film features Kayadu Lohar, Vijayaraghavan, Shatru, Siddique, Baburaj, T G Ravi, Sudheer Karamana, Johny Antony and Prashanth Alexander in pivotal roles. Prithviraj Sukumaran also makes a special cameo appearance, adding another familiar face to the film’s expansive cast.
Pallichattambi is produced by Noufal Ahammed, Brijeesh Mohammed and CCC Brothers under the banners World Wide Films and C Qube Bros Entertainment. The technical crew includes cinematographer Tijo Tomy, editor Sreejith Sarang and composer Jakes Bejoy, whose score complements the film’s blend of emotion and action.
For Tovino, the OTT release continues his successful association with Sony LIV, where several of his previous Malayalam films have found a strong viewership after their theatrical run. As regional cinema continues to enjoy a growing global audience through streaming platforms, Pallichattambi now gets another opportunity to connect with viewers who may have missed it in theatres or are looking to revisit its story.
