Papon Urges India To Stand With Assam As Devastating Floods Claim 68 Lives

Singer Papon has issued an emotional appeal, urging people across India and the world to extend support to Assam as the state battles one of its worst flood disasters in recent years. The Assam-born musician shared a heartfelt video on social media, drawing attention to the scale of the devastation and calling for immediate humanitarian assistance for thousands of families left homeless by the calamity.

Papon Makes An Emotional Appeal For Flood-Hit Assam

Addressing viewers directly, Papon said this year’s floods have surpassed the destruction Assam usually witnesses during the monsoon season.

“Hello everyone, hello India, hello world. I mean, I just wanted to bring to notice what’s happening in Assam right now. The devastation that’s happened because of the floods this year. It rains a lot here, there are floods, but you can’t imagine the situation this time,” he said.

The singer painted a grim picture of submerged villages, displaced families and widespread loss of life and livelihood. He also highlighted the toll the disaster has taken on wildlife and livestock.

“Villages are flooded, people are still homeless, hundreds of people are missing, people have lost their lives…so many animals have died. It’s a bad situation, so please spread the word,” he added.

Appealing for solidarity beyond geographical boundaries, Papon urged people not to ignore the unfolding humanitarian crisis.

“I request everyone in India and across the world to please, you know, look towards Assam. It’s humanity, you know, we all must come together, whatever we can do, and we need to do it quick. We’re all doing our bit here. If you want to help, please come forward,” he said.

His message has resonated widely online, with many social media users sharing the video to amplify awareness about the situation and encourage donations towards relief efforts.

Death Toll Climbs As Relief Operations Continue

Papon’s appeal comes at a time when Assam continues to recover from the devastating impact of the floods. According to the latest Disaster Reporting and Information Management System (DRIMS) bulletin, the flood-related death toll has risen to 68, while lakhs of people remain affected across several districts. Sivasagar, Jorhat and Golaghat are among the worst-hit regions, with hundreds of villages still inundated and thousands of people taking shelter in relief camps.

The Assam government has intensified rescue, relief and rehabilitation efforts as floodwaters gradually recede in several parts of the state. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said ministers have been deployed across affected districts to coordinate relief work and ensure assistance reaches displaced families without delay.

Restoration of essential services has also begun. Electricity, which had been suspended in several areas as a precaution during the floods, is being restored in phases after safety inspections by teams from the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited. Power supply is being reconnected in districts including Sivasagar, Jorhat, Charaideo, Dhubri and Bongaigaon as conditions improve.

The Centre has assured full support to the state. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal described the flood situation as “very serious” and said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been closely monitoring developments while remaining in regular contact with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. A high-level inter-ministerial team has also reached Assam to assess the damage, interact with affected residents and coordinate further assistance.

Even as water levels begin to recede in some areas, officials say rehabilitation will remain a long-term challenge. With damaged infrastructure, submerged farmland and thousands still displaced, authorities continue to prioritise restoring normalcy while relief agencies work to support affected communities.
