Public Review: Yashâs Toxic Faces Criticism for Writing and Editing Netizens Call It Boring and Torture

Yash’s Toxic: A Fairytale for Grown-Ups has finally arrived in theatres on the occasion of Onam today. After generating significant anticipation. The film, which marks Yash’s collaboration with director Geetu Mohandas after four years of work, has received mostly negative early reactions on X. Several viewers have criticised its intimate scenes, writing, editing and lack of emotional connect. However, Yash’s screen presence, striking visuals and ambitious production scale have also earned praise from some audiences.

Toxic is a period action thriller set in post-Independence Goa. The film revolves around the rise of a powerful crime syndicate and the violent world of gangsters. Yash plays a double role as Raya, an older gangster, and his estranged son Rumi, also known as Ticket, who returns to seek revenge after being abandoned.

Now that the first shows are over, viewers have started sharing their reactions to Toxic on X.

One X reviewer had a particularly harsh take on the film, writing, “Guys I’m not exaggerating. Toxic is a disaster of the decade.”

The reviewer also criticised the intimate scenes, calling them forced, while describing the performances of the female actors as “CRINGE PRO MAX”. The songs and background score were also singled out for criticism. Rating the film 2/5, the reviewer called it “a bold and different attempt” but felt that “style without substance” affected the overall experience.

Another moviegoer described the first half as “very messy”, writing on X, “Apart from the technical quality, this one is all over the place so far.” The viewer also called it a “clumsy and tiring screenplay”, artificial-looking action sequences and disappointing background music. However, they felt a few Yash-Kiara scenes were better.

Third X user also expressed disappointment with the first half, writing, “First half of #TOXIC was straight up torture. Feels like watching a 90-minute trailer editing is completely off, zero emotional connection, and scene after scene just drags on.”

Another viewer praised the film’s females and Kiara Advani’s performance, writing, “Toxic is a different world in itself. Leading ladies have solid roles, movie runs high on emotions and feelings. Kiara is fantastic.”

Another X user felt that “the writing doesn’t always hold the film together” and pointed out that certain portions drag. Summing up the overall experience, the viewer called it “a mixed experience with enough positives to make it a one-time watch.”

Overall, the early reactions to Toxic appear largely negative and some are mixed, Kiara Advani is getting all praises for her craft and people are calling her fantastic. Whereas some are impressed by Yash’s performance while others are calling it Unreal.

Toxic stars Yash alongside Kiara Advani, Nayanthara, Rukmini Vasanth, Tara Sutaria and Huma Qureshi.
