The first glimpse of Varanasi left audiences intrigued with its stunning visuals, from the towering Ross Ice Shelf in Antarctica to the majestic Vanara Sena inspired by the Ramayana. Director SS Rajamouli is now raising expectations further by revealing fresh details about the film’s ambitious scale, its IMAX format, and Mahesh Babu’s character journey.
Shooting Varanasi in IMAX
Speaking to French independent cinema magazine Tsounami, Rajamouli explained why he chose to shoot Varanasi in IMAX. Since the film spans multiple timelines and continents, he wanted a format capable of delivering a truly immersive theatrical experience.
The filmmaker revealed that the adventure features colossal Antarctic ice formations rising nearly 300 feet high, alongside massive battle sequences involving the Vanara Sena. According to Rajamouli, IMAX’s expanded aspect ratio allows audiences to fully experience the scale and grandeur of these visually spectacular moments.
The film’s promotional glimpse has already teased breathtaking imagery set across the icy landscapes of Antarctica, the African wilderness and the ancient city of Varanasi, offering a glimpse into the director’s most ambitious vision yet.
Mahesh Babu’s character arc
Rajamouli also shared a significant production update, revealing that nearly 80 per cent of Varanasi has been completed, including its biggest action sequences. Editing and visual effects work are progressing simultaneously alongside the remaining shoot.
Opening up about Mahesh Babu’s character, the filmmaker revealed that the globetrotting adventure begins in Varanasi before taking the protagonist across Antarctica, Africa and ancient Rome, eventually bringing him back to the holy city where the story comes full circle.
The revelation has further heightened anticipation among fans eager to see Mahesh Babu in one of the most ambitious roles of his career. Varanasi, also starring Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Prithviraj Sukumaran and Prakash Raj, is slated for a worldwide theatrical release on April 7, 2027.
