Vikrant Massey Says He Indulged in His Male Ego While Shooting for Mirzapur

The much-loved series Mirzapur is all set to make the leap to the big screen with Mirzapur: The Film. The upcoming film will see several fan-favourite characters return, including Ali Fazal, Pankaj Tripathi, Divyenndu, Shweta Tripathi and more. However, fans were quick to notice the absence of Vikrant Massey, who played the beloved character Bablu Pandit in the first season.

Bablu, Guddu Pandit’s (Ali Fazal) younger brother, was killed off in Season 1, but the character continues to remain one of the most loved in the show. In the film, however, Bablu’s role will be portrayed by Jitendra Kumar. Now, Vikrant Massey has broken his silence on not being a part of Mirzapur: The Film, admitting that he wishes his character had not been killed off.
During a conversation with FLO Bangalore Official, the actor reflected on the early days of the show and how no one anticipated the cultural phenomenon it would become.
“When Mirzapur came my way, it was actually just a bunch of enthusiastic people coming together. There were a lot of wonderful women who were a part of it, too, but primarily the show had, say, maybe 85% men involved, both in front of and behind the camera. It was simply a group of people who came together and said, ‘Let’s make this show.’ So it was just a bunch of people getting together, going out there and indulging our testosterones, our male egos, or patriarchy, if you could say,” he shared.

Recalling the overwhelming response after the series premiered, Massey revealed that he happened to be shooting in Lucknow on the day of the show’s release. By the end of the day, a crowd of nearly 200 to 300 people had gathered outside the set after learning that “Bablu Bhaiya” was filming there. He further shared that fans even followed his vehicle on motorcycles just to click selfies and get autographs.

“And that is when we understood that we had actually created something worthwhile, something that people genuinely enjoyed watching,” he said. Speaking about Bablu’s untimely death, Massey added, “I wish they hadn’t killed me.” Mirzapur: The Film will be released theatrically on September 4.
