The Kim Soo Hyun Prevention Act was launched on March 31, 2025. The National Assembly Electronic Petition System launchedd the same due to the ongoing controversy involving Kim Soo Hyun and late actor Kim Sae Ron. Soo Hyun has been accused of dating Sae Ron when she was a minor.
The actor and his agency have repeatedly denied the claims, but a recent petition has gained momentum in South Korea, which, if approved, could sentence Soo Hyun to five years of prison.
What is the Kim Soo Hyun Prevention Act?
The Kim Soo Hyun Prevention Act appeals South Korean lawmakers to increase the consent age from 16 to 19 years old. The petition calls for stricter legislation to prevent statutory rape. It has been signed by more than 50,000 people so far. It calls for punishments to be applied to the violators.
For those unaware, In South Korea, individuals are considered adults at the age of 19, but the legal age of consent is 16. Under the Kim Soo Hyun Prevention Act, engaging in sexual activity with a minor between the ages of 13 and 16, or performing intimate acts with someone under the age of 13, is classified as rape.
The petitioners have also strictly noted that anyone found guilty under the act would be sentenced to a minimum two-year jail sentence for molestation and a minimum five-year jail sentence for rape.
Recent updates about Kim Soo Hyun
The actor had previously held a press conference where he denied claims of dating Kim Sae Ron. He noted, “I’ll address the biggest concern—I did not date the deceased when she was a minor. We dated five years ago for about a year, long before Queen of Tears aired.” About not accepting his relationship publicly, he added, “As the lead actor of Queen of Tears, I couldn’t confirm the relationship publicly because of its potential impact on the cast and crew.”
