The Odyssey Box Office: Christopher Nolans Epic Gets Off to a Solid Start in India

One of the most anticipated Hollywood releases of the year, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, finally hit theatres on July 17 and opened to a strong start at the Indian box office.
Based on Homer’s ancient Greek epic poem The Odyssey, the film follows Odysseus’ perilous journey home after the Trojan War as he encounters mythical creatures and numerous challenges while trying to reunite with his wife, Penelope. The film boasts a star-studded ensemble cast featuring Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Samantha Morton, Zendaya and Charlize Theron, among others.

According to box office tracking website Sacnilk, The Odyssey collected Rs 17.40 crore net in India on its opening day, and Rs 20.76 crore gross. The film also recorded an overall 48.7 per cent occupancy across theatres on Friday.
Released in multiple languages, including English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu, the original English version emerged as the biggest contributor to the film’s opening-day earnings.
With its Day 1 collection, The Odyssey has registered one of the biggest openings for a Hollywood film in India. It trails Avatar: Fire and Ash, which opened at approximately Rs 18 crore net, and Deadpool & Wolverine, which earned around Rs 21 crore net on its first day.

Filmfare’s review of The Odyssey

Filmfare gave The Odyssey 4 out of 5 stars and wrote, “Like most Nolan films, the actors in The Odyssey end up giving career-best performances. Matt Damon, with his body transformation, lean muscles and weathered emotions and face, is as inspired a casting choice as Christian Bale was in Batman Begins and Cillian Murphy was in Oppenheimer. Equally impressive are the performances by Tom Holland, John Leguizamo, Himesh Patel and Elliot Page. Anne Hathaway has some compelling dialogue and moments, but her role and character remains behind a screen both literally and figuratively. Robert Pattinson as the Iago-like Antinous is entertaining, too. Lupita Nyong’o, Samantha Morton, Zendaya, Jon Bernthal all have impactful but smaller performances and the entire ensemble cast comes together to add dramatic punch to The Odyssey as it has happened so many times in Nolan’s film career before.”
