Actor R Madhavan’s much-awaited biographical drama GDN has officially been postponed. The film, which was originally slated to arrive in theatres on July 17, will now release on August 7. The makers announced the revised release date on social media, confirming that the film will have a pan-India rollout in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi.
Directed by Krishnakumar Ramakumar, GDN chronicles the life of legendary inventor and industrialist GD Naidu, one of India’s most remarkable innovators. While the reason behind the postponement has not been disclosed, the shift gives the makers additional time ahead of the film’s nationwide release.
Madhavan headlines the film as GD Naidu, portraying a man whose contributions to Indian engineering and manufacturing continue to inspire generations. Popularly referred to as the “Edison of India”, GD Naidu rose from humble beginnings in Coimbatore to become one of the country’s most influential inventors and entrepreneurs. A self-taught engineer, he earned recognition for creating affordable technological solutions by adapting imported machinery for Indian needs. His pioneering work extended across transport, engineering, agriculture and manufacturing, cementing his place as one of India’s greatest innovators.
Joining Madhavan in pivotal roles are Jayaram, Priyamani and Yogi Babu. While details about their characters remain under wraps, the ensemble cast has added to the anticipation surrounding the film.

Rocketry collaborators reunite
GDN also marks a reunion between Tricolour Films and Varghese Moolan Pictures after the success of Rocketry: The Nambi Effect. Madhavan, who made his directorial debut with the acclaimed ISRO scientist biopic, returns as producer this time alongside his wife Sarita under their banner Tricolour Films. The project is jointly backed by Vijay Moolan and Varghese Moolan under Varghese Moolan Pictures.
The technical team features several acclaimed names. Music has been composed by Govind Vasantha, whose recent work in films such as 96 and Meiyazhagan earned widespread appreciation for its emotional depth. Cinematography is handled by Aravind Kamalanathan, who also serves as the film’s creative producer, suggesting a strong visual approach to the period drama.
The film has steadily generated curiosity ever since its announcement, not only because of Madhavan’s involvement but also due to the extraordinary life it seeks to bring to the screen. Over the years, the actor has earned praise for portraying real-life personalities with sincerity and restraint, most notably in Rocketry: The Nambi Effect. Expectations are similarly high for his portrayal of GD Naidu, whose story remains relatively unfamiliar to mainstream audiences despite his immense contribution to Indian industry.
