There are films that exist to introduce a new face, and there are films that expect that face to carry them. Thudakkam falls somewhere in between. Jude Anthany Joseph’s thriller asks plenty of its debutant, throwing Vismaya Mohanlal into a physically demanding role while surrounding her with experienced performers. The film itself doesn’t always escape the familiar rhythms of the genre, but its lead performance is convincing enough to keep you invested.
Meenu (Vismaya Mohanlal) leads a quiet life with her father (Sai Kumar) in the high ranges of Kerala. Jude Anthany Joseph lets us spend enough time with them to understand their world before everything comes crashing down. A chance encounter on her way home pulls Meenu into a violent ordeal, forcing her into a desperate fight for survival. Because the film doesn’t rush through its opening act, the danger that follows carries emotional weight instead of feeling like another thriller set piece.
That emotional investment carries the film through much of its first half. Instead of racing towards the action, Jude allows the father-daughter relationship to settle in naturally, making the stakes feel personal before the thriller takes over. The transition into survival mode is a little abrupt, but by then the film has already given us enough reason to care about Meenu’s journey.
Her scenes with Sai Kumar have an easy warmth that makes the relationship believable, and the veteran actor brings much of the film’s emotional weight. The action sequences are where Vismaya Mohanlal leaves the strongest impression. Rather than turning Meenu into an unstoppable action hero, the film keeps every confrontation rooted in panic and survival. Vismaya responds well to that approach, selling the exhaustion and desperation that come with every chase and fight. The emotionally heavier scenes don’t always land with the same consistency, but she shows enough screen presence to hold the film together.
That also has a lot to do with the way Jude stages the action. The confrontations are easy to follow, the editing never loses track of the geography, and the misty high-range locations gradually become as foreboding as the threat pursuing Meenu. The background score supports the tension without constantly trying to tell us how to feel, allowing the action to generate its own momentum.
The film begins to lose some of its momentum once it settles into familiar thriller territory. After an engaging setup, the screenplay starts relying on convenient turns and familiar genre devices instead of building on the emotional tension established earlier. You can often see the next beat coming; and while the pace rarely dips, the suspense does. That familiarity also extends to the dialogue. Too many conversations exist simply to move the story forward, leaving several characters feeling thinner than they should.
That is particularly evident with the film’s antagonist. Aashish Joe Antony has the physical presence needed for the role, but the screenplay rarely allows him to become more than the obstacle standing in Meenu’s way. As the film goes on, the character starts feeling repetitive, reducing the impact of the central conflict. Manoj K Jayan, Jaffer Idukki, Bobby Kurien, Kottayam Ramesh, and Miya George make the most of their limited screen time, even if the screenplay doesn’t always give them enough to do.
Jude Anthany Joseph doesn’t overplay Mohanlal’s brief appearance. It arrives at the right moment, adds to the emotional payoff and leaves before it begins to feel like a distraction. The cameo works because it serves the story before it serves nostalgia.
Thudakkam doesn’t quite rise above the familiar beats of the survival thriller, but it remains an engaging watch. Jude Anthany Joseph gets enough out of a straightforward premise to keep the film moving, even when the screenplay settles for safer choices. It’s a modest thriller with modest ambitions, and for the most part, it delivers exactly what it promises.
