Karthik Subbaraj’s Dorothy has made an impressive international debut at the Toronto International Film Festival 2026, where the Tamil-language feature had its world premiere in the prestigious Centrepiece section. The screening at Toronto’s Scotiabank Theatre was met with a standing ovation, giving the film a warm reception as it begins its journey towards a worldwide theatrical release.
Presented by Jio Studios and produced by Sikhya Entertainment in association with Dhammam Films, Dorothy marks the first Indian Tamil feature to premiere at TIFF in the past decade. The milestone brings Subbaraj’s distinctive filmmaking voice to one of the world’s most prominent film festivals and places a Tamil story before an international audience.
Subbaraj attended the premiere alongside actors Keerthy Suresh, Sananth and Rishikanth, with producers Guneet Monga Kapoor and Achin Jain also present for the occasion.
For Subbaraj, the film’s TIFF premiere carries significance beyond its international exposure. Speaking about the occasion, the filmmaker said, “Dorothy is a story that comes from a place and culture I know intimately, but its questions around friendship, prejudice and human connection are universal. To have its world premiere at TIFF is incredibly special. It gives the film an opportunity to reach audiences across the world while staying true to the story I wanted to tell. And to have Ilaiyaraaja sir’s music accompany that journey makes it even more special.”
A story rooted in Tamil culture with universal themes
Dorothy explores themes of friendship, identity, prejudice and human dignity, with Subbaraj bringing a story rooted in a culture he knows closely to a global festival audience. The film’s international positioning has also been emphasised by Jio Studios president Jyoti Deshpande.

The film has another major talking point attached to it: its music. Dorothy is an Ilaiyaraaja musical, with the legendary composer providing the original score and songs. Two tracks from the film, Kalyana Virundhu and Muthumani, have already crossed 10 million views on YouTube, while both songs have featured among the Top 5 trending music videos on YouTube India.
The music was also taken beyond the film itself through the Dorothy Concert in Chennai. The live event at Image Auditorium featured musicians performing the film’s 18-track score continuously for around 40 minutes, offering audiences an extended concert experience built around Ilaiyaraaja’s compositions.
For producer Guneet Monga Kapoor, the TIFF premiere also adds another chapter to a long-standing relationship with the festival. Her previous TIFF credits include That Girl in Yellow Boots, Peddlers, Gangs of Wasseypur – Part 1 and Part 2, The Lunchbox, Monsoon Shootout, Kill and Yellow Bus.
With Dorothy, that association now extends into Tamil cinema through her collaboration with Subbaraj and Jio Studios. Written and directed by Karthik Subbaraj, Dorothy stars Keerthy Suresh, Sananth and Rishikanth in pivotal roles. Following its festival premiere, the film is scheduled to arrive worldwide in cinemas on September 25, 2026.
