
Elite mountaineer Nirmal ‘Nims’ Purja tragically died at 43. The devastating news of his death was confirmed by his founding mountaineering and adventure guiding company, Elite Exped. Nirmal, along with nine climbers, reportedly went missing after an avalanche on July 30, 2026, on Broad Peak, an 8,047m (26,400ft) mountain in Pakistan-administered Gilgit-Baltistan. It is worth mentioning that Nirmal ‘Nims’ Purja was one of the most recognised figures in mountaineering.

Nepal is mourning the loss of one of its greatest mountaineers, Nirmal ‘Nims’ Purja, today on August 1, 2026. A while back, Nirmal’s mountaineering and adventure guiding company, Elite Exped, which he founded years back, took to their Instagram handle to announce his untimely death. Sharing the disheartening news of his death, the company wrote:
“Today, it is with profound sadness and immense heartbreak that we confirm that Nirmal ‘Nimsdai’ Purja tragically lost his life following the avalanche on Broad Peak. We have also received confirmation that other members of the expedition sadly did not survive. Today, we mourn not only Nims, but every life lost in this tragedy, including his trusted climbing partners and guides, Pur Bahadur Gurung (Yukta) and Nima Sherpa. Our deepest thoughts, prayers and heartfelt condolences are with their families, friends and loved ones. No words can ease the pain of this unimaginable loss, and we ask that everyone respect their privacy as they grieve.”
