John Abrahamâs Amma Ariyan To Have Restored 4K World Premiere At Cannes 2026

Nearly four decades after it first reshaped the language of Malayalam parallel cinema, Amma Ariyan is set to return to the global stage. The final film directed by John Abraham will have the world premiere of its restored 4K version at the 79th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, scheduled to be held from May 12 to 23 in France.

The restored version of the 1986 Malayalam cult classic is the only Indian feature selected for a world premiere at this year’s festival, marking a major moment not just for Malayalam cinema, but also for the preservation of Indian film heritage.

Announcing the news on social media, Film Heritage Foundation wrote, “In a milestone achievement, FHF returns to the Cannes Film Festival for the 5th consecutive year for the world premiere of our 4K restoration of John Abraham’s cult Malayalam film Amma Ariyan (Report to Mother, 1986).”

The restoration was carried out by Film Heritage Foundation in collaboration with L’Immagine Ritrovata and Digital Film Restore Pvt Ltd, in association with the Odessa Collective. The project reportedly used one of only two surviving 35mm release prints preserved at the National Film Archive of India.

The film will be presented at Cannes by Shivendra Singh Dungarpur, the director of Film Heritage Foundation, alongside actor Joy Mathew, cinematographer Venu and editor Bina Paul.

The Enduring Legacy Of John Abraham

Few filmmakers in Indian cinema have attained the kind of mythic reputation that John Abraham has, despite directing only four feature films before his death in 1987 at the age of 49. A graduate of the Film and Television Institute of India, Abraham emerged as one of the most uncompromising voices of India’s parallel cinema movement.

His films often rejected conventional storytelling structures and embraced political anger, realism and experimentation. Amma Ariyan remains perhaps his most influential work.

Set against Kerala’s turbulent socio-political backdrop, the film follows a group of friends and activists travelling across the state to inform a mother about the death of her son, a political percussionist. Along the way, the journey transforms into a meditation on grief, activism, memory and disillusionment. Blending documentary textures with fictional storytelling, the film broke away from mainstream cinematic grammar and went on to become a defining work in Malayalam arthouse cinema.

What continues to make Amma Ariyan remarkable even today is the urgency of its politics and the rawness of its filmmaking. Produced through the Odessa Collective, which famously took cinema directly to the people through grassroots screenings and public funding, the film represented a radically democratic approach to filmmaking long before independent cinema became a larger movement in India.

Over the years, Amma Ariyan has continued to influence generations of filmmakers, cinephiles and film scholars, with many regarding it as one of the most important films ever made in Malayalam cinema. Its Cannes screening now offers international audiences a renewed opportunity to engage with a work that remains deeply rooted in Kerala’s cultural and political history while still resonating far beyond it.

For Malayalam cinema, which has increasingly found global recognition in recent years, the restoration and premiere of Amma Ariyan also serves as a reminder that its spirit of experimentation and political storytelling has existed for decades.
