Karthik Subbaraj is counting down to the September 25 release of Dorothy, his upcoming film starring Keerthy Suresh, Sananth and Rishikanth. While the film has already generated interest with its first song, Kalyana Virundhu, the filmmaker has now shared an interesting story about how Ilaiyaraaja came on board as the composer.
Kalyana Virundhu, which was released recently, features lyrics and composition by Ilaiyaraaja. The song marked the first musical glimpse of the film, but according to Karthik, the collaboration came together only after the veteran composer watched the first cut of Dorothy.
Taking to social media on Friday, Karthik recalled the moment he showed the film to Ilaiyaraaja. The director said he was anxiously waiting to hear the composer’s reaction, with the silence that followed making the moment even more tense.
“I showed the first cut of Dorothy to Raaja sir and was eagerly looking at him awaiting what’s he gonna say. After few moments of silence he looked at me and said ‘Beautiful film… Let’s start work from tomorrow morning’. I was so so excited and was processing the fact that Raaja sir agreed to compose for my film and that’s when Raaja sir said ‘The Background score should be released as an album before the release of the film.’”
A Raaja Sambavam Before Dorothy
For Karthik, getting Ilaiyaraaja to score Dorothy was clearly a significant moment. The director has previously collaborated with several acclaimed composers, but the opportunity to have Ilaiyaraaja create the background score for one of his films carries its own significance, particularly given the composer’s long association with Tamil cinema.
What made the experience even more memorable for Karthik was Ilaiyaraaja’s suggestion that the background score be released as an album before the film itself reached theatres. The filmmaker decided to follow through on the request, turning the soundtrack into a separate musical event ahead of Dorothy’s release.
Karthik also revealed that he jokingly referred to the anticipated soundtrack as a “Raaja Sambavam”, reflecting his excitement about what the composer had created.
“My mind voice was… ‘Rightu…Appo Sambavam Confirm… ‘ and here we are now… Raaja Bliss – Dorothy OST releasing tomorrow digitally and also in limited Vinyl records,” the director shared.
The OST will also get a live presentation. Karthik revealed that the music from *Dorothy* will be performed as a 40-minute concert at Image Auditorium in R.A. Puram, Chennai. For fans of Ilaiyaraaja’s music, the event will offer an opportunity to hear the film’s score outside the context of the movie itself.

Dorothy is being positioned as Karthik Subbaraj’s next directorial outing after his recent work across different genres. The film features Keerthy Suresh in the lead, alongside Sananth and Rishikanth. The project has additional screenplay contributions from Saravanan Chandran.
The technical crew includes cinematographer S Thirunavukkarasu, editor Ganesh Siva and stunt director Dinesh Subbarayan. Dorothy is produced by Jyoti Deshpande, Guneet Monga Kapoor and Achin Jain, with Sikhya Entertainment and Dhammam Films backing the project. Sikhya Entertainment and Jio Studios are presenting the film.
With the first song now out and the complete original soundtrack arriving ahead of the theatrical release, the music has become an important part of Dorothy’s pre-release campaign. More significantly, Karthik’s account offers a glimpse into the director’s own excitement about working with one of Tamil cinema’s most celebrated composers.
Dorothy is scheduled to arrive in theatres on September 25, with Ilaiyaraaja’s score set to be heard by audiences as part of the film’s overall experience.
