
Nithya Raman, who hails from Kerala, India, is leading in the second spot in the primary election for Los Angeles mayor. The primary election for the post was conducted on January 2, 2026, and till now, 80 per cent of the ballots have been counted, as reported. As Nithya Raman reached second spot, she just edged past the reality TV star, Spenser Pratt, who has been running in the second spot since the night of the election, but recently he dropped to the third position with 26.69 per cent of the total votes, where Nithya has progressed to 27.1 per cent of the total votes, which means she just overtook Pratt with 3,000 votes.
A Los Angeles mayoral candidate can win with 50 per cent of the votes in the primary round, or else, the two finishers will be placed for the November runoff. To mention, for the primary election for Los Angeles mayor, as of now, the first spot has been taken by Karen Bass, who is leading with more than 34 per cent of the votes. Nithya Raman was born to Tamil parents in Kerala in 1981, and she was only 6 years old when she moved from India to Louisiana with her family. Nithya earned her graduation degree in political theory from Harvard University, and following this, she bagged a master’s degree in urban planning from MIT. According to her bio, she served for several years on the Silver Lake Neighbourhood Council Homelessness Committee, and following this, she co-founded the SELAH Neighbourhood Homeless Coalition. While working, she felt that there was a gap between city services and the homelessness crisis, which has been escalating, and Nithya wanted to fill the gap.
