Urmila Matondkar reveals she was stereotyped as an item girl ignoring her talent
Urmila Matondkar sat down for an interview with Times Of India and recalled being stereotyped in the 90s. The actress explained that in a couple of the characters she played, her fashion and good looks were loved a lot and made people overlook her talent. Although she simultaneously worked in less glamorous and complex roles, gaining critical acclaim, it was often overlooked. Praising the present media for presenting better coverage of actresses, she said:
“My body of work includes some of the finest films, but I was still slotted as an item girl or a sex siren. The sexy image you see in Rangeela is a character’s fantasy, not who I am.”
