Ameesha Patel immortalised the role of Sakeena Ali Singh, Tara Singh’s (Sunny Deol) love interest and later wife, in the Gadar franchise. Set against the backdrop of the Partition of India in 1947, the films remain among Hindi cinema’s most celebrated period dramas.
Similarly, Batwara 1947, which releases on August 14, is also set in Lahore during the Partition. In the film, Preity Zinta plays Hamida Mirza, the wife of Sunny Deol’s character, Sikander Mirza. Given the similarities in setting and character dynamics, comparisons between Sakeena and Hamida have been inevitable.
During a recent #AskAmy session on X (formerly Twitter), a fan praised Ameesha’s performance while claiming that Preity appeared to be trying hard to recreate the magic of Sakeena.
The fan wrote, “Have you watched the Batwara trailer? It feels like Preity Zinta is trying very hard to copy your iconic Sakina. But some characters are simply unforgettable. And no one can recreate the magic you and Sunny sir gave us in Gadar.”
Rather than encouraging the comparison, Ameesha responded with warmth and grace. “Woh bhi bahut khoobsurat hai bhai. Sakina wishes her the best. Tara ka dhyaan rakhna till he’s not back to where he belongs.”
Her reply quickly won hearts online, with many praising the actress for refusing to pit two female actors against each other. Netizens applauded her maturity, sportsmanship and the respect she showed towards a fellow actress.
