Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukerji, Preity Zinta and Abhishek Bachchan’s 2006 film Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna will be adapted into a web series, confirmed filmmaker Karan Johar. In one of his recent interviews, Johar spoke about his decision to revisit the film and opened up on people’s polarised views on the film.
He told The Week, “We are actually turning it into a long-form series. The roots of this film lie in 2006, when it was released, and public opinion regarding it was deeply divided. Many people approached me and asked if I was unwell, as they believed, ‘How can you justify infidelity?’ To that, I replied, ‘How can you justify something that has already become such a common occurrence?'”

Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna follows Dev (SRK), a former footballer stuck in an unhappy marriage with Rhea (Preity), and Maya (Rani), who feels unfulfilled in her marriage with Rishi (Abhishek). The two meet by chance and form a bond over their shared dissatisfaction, which gradually turns into an extramarital affair. When their relationship is exposed, both marriages fall apart, and Dev and Maya go their separate ways. Years later, they reunite and choose to be together openly.
Johar continued, “I realised that we are in such a polarised audience space that people judge what happens in their homes, they forget it, they brush it under the carpet, but they don’t want to watch it on celluloid, even though it’s probably a reality in their own home.”
“So, it is confirmed that we are producing a series. It will be a long-form show for a specific platform, details of which I cannot disclose to you at this moment. However, I can certainly say that it will be released very soon,” he concluded.
Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna was directed by Karan Johar and produced by Dharma Productions.
