Jayaram and Simran are set to reunite on screen, more than two decades after their memorable collaboration in Panchathanthiram (2002). The actors are coming together as the lead pair for the first time in an untitled romantic entertainer, which is being directed by SY Gauthamraj. The filmmaker previously directed Jyotika in Raatchasi and Arulnithi in Kazhuvethi Moorkan.
The film officially commenced with a pooja ceremony on Sunday, August 23, marking the beginning of a project that brings together two performers who have largely pursued different trajectories since their last outing together. While Panchathanthiram featured the duo as part of an ensemble led by Kamal Haasan, the new film places Jayaram and Simran at the centre of its narrative.
The reunion is particularly interesting because both actors have maintained strong associations with Tamil cinema despite working extensively across other industries. Jayaram, who has moved comfortably between Malayalam and Tamil projects over the years, has already had three releases in 2026, namely Kara, Parimala and Co, and GDN. Simran, meanwhile, was last seen in Sasikumar-starrer Tourist Family in 2025 and has Rajinikanth’s Dharman lined up next.
A generational story with a familiar flavour
The makers are positioning the new film as a rom-com that brings two generations into the same narrative space. The story revolves around relationships between members of the Gen Z generation and those belonging to the 90s generation, with the contrasting attitudes, expectations and experiences of the two groups driving the incidents in the film.
That premise gives the project room to balance contemporary relationship dynamics with a touch of nostalgia. It also offers an intriguing context for Jayaram and Simran, whose screen reunion itself carries a sense of generational recall for audiences who remember their earlier collaboration. Rather than simply capitalising on nostalgia, the film appears to be using the meeting of different generations as the foundation for its humour and relationship drama.
The cast also includes Ponvel, who earned attention for his performance in Mari Selvaraj’s Vaazhai, along with Devika Sathish and Bhagavathi Perumal, popularly known as Bucks. K Vijay Pandi of White Carpet Films and Shanjan G of Redacted Studios are producing the project, while actor Arya’s The Show People banner is presenting it.
Behind the camera, Deepak is handling cinematography, with Achu Rajamani composing the music. Arul E Siddharth is editing the film and Mahendran is responsible for the art direction.
